Assignment 1: The Genetic Code

Scenario:

You are a baker in your local bakery. You have had a batch of bread that has failed to rise and you think it could be due to a new batch of yeast. You have been asked to conduct an investigation to demonstrate how different organisms have different functions and describe how this controlled by genes.

    It would be good to have method worksheets for the pupils to follow with the hydrogen peroxide and sugar experiments. The general worksheet is not very clear.

    For the peroxide experiment simply add the materials to the peroxide solution (see technician’s notes for details) and the pupils record their observations. For the sugar investigation the materials are added to the sugar solutions (technician’s notes). A balloon is placed over each tube. The tables are placed in a warm place (for example near a radiator) for the duration of a lesson and the tubes/balloons observed. It is important that a full risk assessment is carried out when considering this (or any other) practical activity.
